ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR

Edward Byles Cowell (1826-1903) was a prominent translator of Persian poetry and the inaugural Sanskrit professor at Cambridge University. His interest in Oriental languages began at 15 when he discovered Sir William Jones's works. Self-taught, he translated Hafez. After a stint as a professor in Calcutta, he returned to England as the first Cambridge Sanskrit professor. Cowell's most notable contribution was the discovery of an Omar Khayyám manuscript, which led to Edward Fitzgerald's famous translation. He received numerous honors and became a founding member of the British Academy. His cousin George Cowell wrote a biography, and he left behind various significant publications on Persian and Sanskrit texts.
